10 Reasons NOT to Eat Sugar!

Vista Chiropractor Comments:

Just in time for Halloween.

Sugar, in its many forms, is an increasingly common ingredient in processed foods. Many of us eat the equivalent of 53 heaping teaspoons of white sugar every day!

Here are ten reasons to avoid refined (white) sugar:

1. Sugar contributes to tooth decay because it decreases the effectiveness of a particular type of white blood cell that “eats” bacteria.

2. Sugar causes the body to release more adrenalin, which may explain hyperactivity in young children.

3. Calcium loss in urine occurs when a person consumes a soft drink containing sugar.

4. Ingesting sugar makes the pancreas work harder to produce insulin. Diabetes results when the overworked pancreas’ can no longer eliminate sugar from the blood stream.

5. Bleached with chlorine, when white refined sugar is exposed to certain organic compounds it converts to dioxin, a lethal compound.

6. Sugar can hinder weight loss because high insulin levels (see #4 above) cause the body to store excess carbohydrates as fat.

7. Sugar increases the likelihood of chronic fatigue.

8. Sugar increases mood swings, irritability and anxiety.

9. Sugar compromises the immune system because it lowers the efficiency of white blood cells for a minimum of five hours.

10. Eating sugar can decrease helpful high-density cholesterol (HDLs) and result in an increase in harmful cholesterol (LDLs).

Need to sweeten your food? Add raisins, dates or honey. Stevia is also a safer alternative. It’s available in several forms, has no calories and doesn’t raise blood sugar levels. Clearly, a better choice to satisfy any sweet tooth!

What Does It Mean To Be Obese?

Vista Chiropractor Comments:

  • Approx. 16% of American children are currently overweight.
  • The July 2005 issue of the NIH News In Health, more than twice as many children are overweight now compared to 30 years ago.
  • 60% of all American adults are overweight or obese. This figure has doubled since 1980.
  • 400,000 deaths each year due to obesity and related illnesses.
  • Americans spend $117 billion a year on obesity linked illnesses.
  • Average 12 teaspoons of sugar in 1 can of soda.
  • 1 in 3 children born after 2000 will develop diabetes if current trends continue.
  • 17 million people currently have diabetes (1 in 20 people, or almost 6% of our population)
  • 41 million Americans have pre-diabetes (1 in 5 people)
  • If diabetes begins before age 15 you lose an average of 17-27 yrs of life!

- If the CDC predictions are accurate, from 45 million to 50 million Americans could have diabetes by 2050 and there is no way that the medical community could keep up with that. -

Are You Living The DREAM?

Vista Chiropractor Comments:

Do you want an abundance of health? You can have it beginning today. We are taught to believe that we are a victim of our genetics, that it doesn't matter how we live or what we put in our body every day. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact cutting edge researchers are now telling us that our LIFESTYLE contributes to 90% of our health and only 10% is genetics. Here is the key to lifelong abundant health, the DREAM.

Diet: Eat 5-9 servings of fresh fruits and veggies each day (a serving is about the size of your fist). Another way of saying this is 50-90% of what you eat should be fruits and veggies.

Rest: Americans are on average sleep deprived by 1 hour each day. That’s like missing 45 nights of sleep over a years time!

Exercise: Moderate exercise for 30 minutes will raise your metabolism for up to 10 hours. I recommend Crossfit for optimum physical performance, nothing matches its potency.

Adjustments: Weekly chiropractic adjustments will improve your health and function and boost your immune capacity up to 200% according to a study done by Ronald Pero, PhD. Say goodbye to colds and flu

Mental Attitude: With a positive attitude you will live, on average, 7 years longer than a person with a poor mental attitude. (Just think about how much better those 7 years will be with a great attitude.) Here is the study

Well? Are you living or just getting by?
We are here to help you improve your health and reach your OPTIMUM POTENTIAL!!!

Lower Your Fever and Stay Sick

Vista Chiropractor Comments:

Since we were children, we have been taught that if you have a fever, it is a bad thing and we need to lower our temperature or something bad can happen. Now researchers are telling us that this may not be a good idea. It turns out that our body "may" actually know what it is doing and if we interfere with the natural process we could have more of what we are trying to avoid.

Researchers at the University of Maryland have publicly stated what chiropractors and other drug-free, vitalistic healers have been saying for a long time: taking aspirin or Tylenol™ for the flu actually could prolong your illness by up to 3½ days. Fever is the body's natural way of fighting an infection and taking aspirin or acetaminophen (Tylenol™) interferes with your body’s natural healing process.

Dr. Leland Rickman, an associate clinical professor of medicine at the University of California, San Diego says "You're messing with Mother Nature". An elevated temperature "may actually help the body fight the infection quicker or better than if you don't have a fever."  The researchers found that influenza A sufferers who were treated with aspirin or acetaminophen extended their illness from 5 days to about 8½ days. Aspirin and acetaminophen may prolong influenza A and possibly other viral infections according to researchers.

Chiropractic for colds and flu?  But isn’t chiropractic just for back pain? Not at all. Many people who initially visit chiropractors for aches and pains discover to their surprise an improvement in their general health, including no or fewer (and less severe) colds, flu and other respiratory problems.

Should Your Child Get Swine Flu Vaccine?

Do NOT Let Your Child Get Flu Vaccine -- 9 Reasons Why

Here is an article that I "lifted" from www.mercola.com. There is an amazing amount of media hype about the swine flu that is designed to sell vaccines. In this video clip the expert says he would not give the swine flu vaccine to his family because it is untested and high risk, notice how quickly the newscaster ends the conversation.

This year it is more important that you protect your children and loved ones from the flu vaccines than influenza itself.

In his article published on LewRockwell.com, Bill Sardi details 18 reasons why you should not vaccinate your children against the flu this season. Here are nine of them:
  1. The swine flu is simply another flu. It is not unusually deadly.
  2. This is the first time both seasonal and pandemic flu vaccines will be administered. Both seasonal flu and swine flu vaccines will require two inoculations. This is because single inoculations have failed to produce sufficient antibodies. This is an admission that prior flu vaccines were virtually useless. Can you trust them this time?
  3. Adjuvants are added to vaccines to boost production of antibodies but may trigger autoimmune reactions. Some adjuvants are mercury (thimerosal), aluminum and squalene. Why would you sign a consent form for your children to be injected with mercury, which is even more brain-toxic than lead?
  4. This is the first year mock vaccines have been used to gain FDA approval. The vaccines that have been tested are not the same vaccines your children will be given.
  5. Over-vaccination is a common practice now in America. American children are subjected to 29 vaccines by the age of two. Meanwhile, veterinarians have backed off of repeat vaccination in dogs because of observed side effects.
  6. Modern medicine has no explanation for autism, despite its continued rise in prevalence. Yet autism is not reported among Amish children who go unvaccinated.
  7. Researchers are warning that over-use of the flu vaccine and anti-flu drugs like Tamiflu and Relenza can apply genetic pressure on flu viruses and then they are more likely to mutate into a more deadly strain.
  8. Most seasonal influenza A (H1N1) virus strains tested from the United States and other countries are now resistant to Tamiflu (oseltamivir). Tamiflu has become a nearly worthless drug against seasonal flu.
  9. Public health officials are irresponsible in their omission of any ways to strengthen immunity against the flu. No options outside of problematic vaccines and anti-flu drugs are offered, despite the fact there is strong evidence that vitamins C and D activate the immune system and the trace mineral selenium prevents the worst form of the disease.
For even more reasons -- 18 in all -- please review the full article on LewRockwell.com.

Healthy Anti-Inflammatory Foods

Vista Chiropractor Comments:

Anti-Inflammatory Foods

Diet and Nutrition

Healthy foods like fish high in Omega-3 fats, leafy greens and vegetables aren’t just good for you – they’re also delicious!

What comes to your mind when you hear the word, “inflammation”? Think about a time when you cut your finger and it got infected. It probably got red and swollen and it hurt too – classic symptoms of inflammation, your body’s natural response to infection. Would it surprise you to find out that your body can become inflamed because of the foods you eat?

Inflammation in your body usually occurs when you eat foods that contain flour or sugar/sweeteners. These types of food also tend to pack on the pounds and being overweight can cause inflammation, speed up the aging process and put you at risk for heart disease.

So instead of eating bagels, doughnuts, cakes, red meat, processed foods, junk foods and fast foods with unhealthy oils and trans fats that cause inflammation, try some anti-inflammatory foods that reduce inflammation and promote health:
    • Fish that is rich in omega-3 fats, including wild Alaskan (not farmed) salmon, herring, halibut, snapper, striped bass and tuna
    • Grass-fed beef rather than grain-fed beef; grass-fed beef is higher in omega-3 fats while grain-fed has no omega-3 fats, but plenty of saturated, pro-inflammatory fats instead
    • Extra-virgin olive oil rather than vegetable oil
    • Salads that contain dark green leafy vegetables, spinach, tomatoes, bell peppers, kale, broccoli and other vegetables that are rich in antioxidants, vitamin C and other nutrients that help to reduce inflammation
    • Fruits, such as cherries, apples, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, pineapple, oranges, lemons and limes; cherries and blueberries are especially effective anti-inflammatory fruits that are packed with antioxidants and available frozen all year round
    • Herbs and spices that flavor foods but are no or low-calorie, such as turmeric, ginger, thyme, parsley, rosemary, basil, cinnamon and mint
    • Green tea, which contains natural anti-inflammatory compounds that may reduce your risk of heart disease or cancer
When you replace pro-inflammatory foods with anti-inflammatory foods you reduce inflammation, promote weight loss, decrease pain associated with inflammation and lower your risk for chronic heart disease. Keep up with your regular chiropractic adjustments and add some inflammation-reducing exercise and you should be well on the road to experiencing true health.

Strong Muscles & Strong Minds

Vista Chiropractor Comments:

Ideal Protein Sources to Build Strong Muscles and Strong Minds*

1. Salmon: (ideal- also high source of Omega 3 E.F.A. for your brain)
Note: Do not eat farmed Salmon, aka. “Atlantic Salmon”. It is loaded with pollutants and is not safe for daily consumption. The pink color from farmed salmon is food dye!

2. Tuna: 2nd best, but canned tuna is loaded with mercury (0.4 - 0.6 ppm).

3. Turkey: (only non-processed without Nitrates, excellent source of Tryptophan, an Essential Amino Acid for brain function).  Boars Head is a good brand

4. Tofu – Organic of course

5. Veggie-Dogs and Veggie Bologna: Soy Protein (e.g. Yves Brand)

6. Protein Powder: **Whey and or Soy (Jay Robb’s is great)

7. Eggs: hard boiled or scrambled (best without hormones or antibiotics and are Omega 3 supplemented)

8. Seeds: Pumpkin and Flax Seed (also high in Omega 3 EFA)

9. Whole grains

10. Beans

11. Fresh Water Algae: (e.g. Super Blue-Green Algae)

12. Nuts: Walnuts, Almonds, Macadamia

13. Braggs Liquid Amino Acids: Soy sauce substitute; tastes identical

14. Beef and Chicken: although high in protein, they are also highly acidic to the body. Beef is also high in saturated fat. In addition, they commonly have high concentrations of hormones and antibiotic residues, which are detrimental to your body. Ask for grain fed, hormone and antibiotic free selections.

I also recommend Dr. Barry Sears The Zone. It is a very well balanced program and will teach you how to get the most out of the food you eat.

* Proteins are made up of building blocks called amino acids. Your brain produces neurotransmitters (e.g. Dopamine, Serotonin) that help you feel good, remember and concentrate. Your body needs amino acids to make a constant supply of these vital neurotransmitters.

Stealth Nutrition!

Vista Chiropractor Comments:

I am asked all the time " how can I get my kids to eat healthy?" I always reply that you must lead by example first and then come up with creative ways to give them excellent nutrition in ways that they love.

Here is a quick recipe for a nutrition packed smoothie that everyone in the family will love.
Place all ingredients in blender in the order listed and blend until smooth and creamy. If you are using undenatured whey protein, add it last and do not blend it, instead mix in with a fork to retain all the available glutathione levels. Serve immediately for breakfast at home or on the run. Serves 3-4.This is a great tasting, highly nutritious liquid meal, fueling you and your child’s brain and body, for high academic and athletic performance.
* Don’t throw out your over ripe bananas, instead, simply peel, place in plastic wrap and put in freezer for tomorrow’s Power Smoothie!

Super Protein, Power Smoothie

1/2 Cup Whole, Raw Almonds
1/4 Cup Raw Oats (Organic preferred or other- e.g. Quaker-Old Fashioned)
1-2 Heaping Tsp, Very Green Drink Powder - e.g. Berry Green, Emerald Balance, VitaMineral Green, etc.
3-4 Cups Vanilla Rice Dream or Lite SoyMilk (Add until desired thickness)
2 Tbs Omega 3 Oil (Essential Fatty Acid= E.F.A., e.g. Flaxseed oil or other quality combination)
1 Cup fresh or frozen fruit. (Strawberries, Raspberries, Blueberries, Mango, etc.- be creative)
1 Banana- Frozen (preferred)
 Blend above ingredients then add:
1-2 Heaping scoops of undenatured Whey Protein Powder (Chocolate, Vanilla or Strawberry, etc.)
*Mix protein with a fork - Do not blend

* Proteins are made up of building blocks called amino acids. Your brain produces neurotransmitters (e.g. Dopamine, Serotonin) that help you feel good, remember and concentrate. Your body needs amino acids to make a constant supply of these vital neurotransmitters.
** Whey Protein is also a powerful immune booster. (I like J. Robb’s)

Top 5 Reasons To Get Adjusted During Pregnancy

1. Physical Comfort
Drug-Free RELIEF from:

2. Emotional balance
Adjustments can balance brain and body function.

3. Faster and Easier Labor & Delivery
Research shows that women who get adjusted on a weekly basis during their pregnancy had faster and easier deliveries than those who did not.

4. Turn or Help Prevent Breech Babies
The uterus can get twisted from misalignments and subluxation in the spine. When this happens the baby doesn’t have its optimum space to “spread out” and ends up in the breech position. Specific adjustments can help to release that twisting, allowing the uterus to open fully and give your baby plenty of room.

5. Healthier Mom and Baby
Your body is designed to be healthy; you are an amazing self-healing person. Chiropractic adjustments release blocked nerves in your spine which allows your body to heal itself. Adjustments allow the messages from your brain to reach every organ and cell in your body; including your uterus and baby! When you get adjusted regularly you are healthier and therefore your baby is healthier because they are getting a better nerve flow from your brain.
